Torrumbarry Fish Ladder

The weir at Torrumbarry on the Murray River is well worth a visit. There is a good, clear view of the ‘fish ladder’. This facility allows fish to negotiate their way upstream and it was fascinating to observe.

The caged ladder was arranged next to the weir in a maze-like construction. The fish are apparently encouraged to ‘climb’ their way to the top against the water flow and continue upstream.

On my return across the weir, I noticed a lively pelican and his two henchmen. They had positioned themselves at the bottom of the ladder, there patiently to await lunch.

First Past the Post

While checking out some old, disused railway line earlier this month, I found myself in the blink-and-you-miss-it town of Morundah in the Riverina district of New South Wales. It is always exciting when you stop at little townships. You never know what you are going to find.

Morundah did not disappoint. It has Toolbox, the extraordinary sculpture of a horse and jokey which was placed in the main street, back in December 2009 . The work of talented Andrew Whitehead, the sculpture commemorates one hundred years of picnic horse racing in Morundah.

And why Toolbox? Perhaps because every tool in the shed went into its making!
